Blame It on My Youth is a deeply personal concert project from Andrew Butt, celebrating the great songwriters of the 1970s, the music that shaped his musical voice.

The performance places a particular focus on the master writers of the late twentieth century, including Joni Mitchell, Enrico Morricone, Don Walker and Johny Mercer, alongside Andrew’s own Queensland Music Award winning original compositions.

Rather than simple reinterpretations, these songs are reimagined through a contemporary jazz lens that is lyrical, spacious and driven by improvisation, drawing connections between folk, cinematic writing, rock and jazz. The result is reflective and atmospheric, blending nostalgia with fresh creative exploration.

Andrew has been prominent on the Australian Music scene for over 30 years, being a multiple winner of the Queensland Music Awards. Other accolades include a Churchill Fellowship and performing as a jazz soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Lord Mayor's City Hall Concerts presents Kellee Green and Andrew Butt Trio.

Long time friends and collaborators Andrew Butt (saxophone) and Kellee Green (piano) will play a set of nostalgic music from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Think popular jazz standards and songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles and more.

Andrew and Kellee both play jazz regularly in their own groups and freelance in Brisbane and interstate. Andrew's accolades include being a multiple winner of the Queensland Music Awards, a Churchill Fellowship and performing as a jazz soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Kellee has recorded for the ABC as part of their 'Fresh Start' series of commissions, and has recently released her debut album, 'Home', for which the title track was awarded Highly Commended at the Queensland Music Awards.

azz pianist and composer from Meanjin (Brisbane), Kellee Green has been performing regularly in Brisbane and interstate for the last thirty years at venues such as the Brisbane Jazz Club, JMI Live and The Paris Cat. In 2022 she recorded Mothers’ Suite, Sweet Mothers, a five-movement work for piano and violin that was commissioned for ABC Classic’s Fresh Start series and recorded by the label. This piece was highly reviewed and is on regular rotation on ABC Classic.

In recent years she has performed at the 2023 and 2024 Brisbane International Jazz Festivals and is the regular pianist for the Andrew Butt Trio+. This group launched their third album, Peregian, as part of the BIJF in October last year to high acclaim.

This performance is to launch Kellee’s debut album of her own music, Home, featuring Samuel Vincent on double bass and John Parker on drums (both members of the internationally renowned jazz trio, Trichotomy), with special guests Andrew Butt on saxophones (QMA winner and Churchill Fellowship Scholar) and Kristin Berardi (SWITZERLAND) on vocals (National Jazz Award, National Freedman Fellowship for Jazz, Montreux Jazz Festival's International Jazz Vocal Competition and multi-Bell Award-winner). The title track of this album received Highly Commended at the 2022 Queensland Music Awards in the Jazz category.

Peregian is the third album of Brisbane-based saxophonist, Andrew Butt. 15 incredible jazz artists will take the stage tonight at the Brisbane Jazz Club, to celebrate the 2024 UNESCO International Jazz Day - the world’s largest celebration of jazz globally. “This day is intended to raise awareness of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for empathy, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.”

KELLEE GREEN TRIO Jazz pianist and teacher, Kellee Green, will premier original works from her upcoming album Home, featuring Samuel Vincent on bass and John Parker on drums, with special guest, Andrew Butt on saxophone.

DAVID BENTLEY TRIO David Bentley is an award-winning jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter and leads DB3, a swinging, spirited and multi-faceted lineup with Andrew Shaw (bass) and Nathan Goldman (drums), that focusses on David’s original material, but also brings fresh harmonic interest to blues and jazz standards - as well as delivering a unique take on classic New Orleans grooves. He has recorded several albums of original material and is known internationally as a songwriter. David holds journalism’s most prestigious award, the Gold Walkley.

SHELLEY BISHOP QUARTET A spirited and “uber” talented multi-instrumentalist and producer, Shelley Bishop has worked at the legendary Chicago Recording Company alongside acts such as Kayne West, Chance the Rapper, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga and Mavis Staples. She has had the opportunity to work on GRAMMY award-winning releases and holds a Masters of Science in Leadership for the Creative Enterprises from Northwestern University (Chicago), as well as a Bachelor of Music Business from Elhurst University (Chicago), and an Associate Diploma of Music from Trinity College, London. Shelley will perform with Peta Wilson (piano), Andrew Shaw (bass) and Nathan Goldman (drums).

ADAM LOPEZ DUO Opera trained singer, Adam Lopez, has captivated audience worldwide with his Guinness World Record-breaking high notes and multi-octave vocal range. He has spent the past couple of decades singing pop, Latin and jazz, while maintaining his passion for the classics, particularly with a countertenor repertoire. Prepare to be astounded by his versatility in adapting his voice to different genres and amazing vocal agility. Tonight, he is joined by Gareth Jones on piano.

Unesco officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world. It celebrates and teaches about jazz and its roots, its future and impact, raises awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, and reinforces international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, jazz is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, respect for human rights and human dignity, eradicating discrimination, fostering gender equality, and promoting freedom of expression.
